Hook

Open with tension, contrast or an immediate reason to keep watching.

Beat

Each sentence should move the viewer closer to the payoff.

Payoff

Close the curiosity gap you opened in the first seconds.

What you'll get
  • A spoken hook plus the on-screen text for the first second.
  • 3–5 beats: what to say, what to show, and why each keeps people watching.
  • A payoff that answers the hook, and a close that fits the topic.
  • An estimated runtime, and one click to score the hook.
How to script a Short

Hook, beats, payoff — and nothing in between

A good Short feels like one idea delivered without a wasted second. The structure is simple: a hook that opens a question, a few beats that move toward the answer, and a payoff that actually closes it.

01

Write the payoff first

Decide the one thing the viewer should know or see at the end, then write the hook as the question that payoff answers. Scripts written top-down tend to wander.

Weak

Hook: "Let's talk about editing." … Payoff: "Anyway, hope that helps!"

Better

Payoff: "Cut the first two seconds of every clip." → Hook: "Your Shorts feel slow because of the first two seconds of every clip."

02

Every beat earns the next one

Each line should give the viewer a reason to hear the next. If a beat could be removed without the payoff making less sense, remove it.

Weak

Beat: "Editing is really important for creators these days."

Better

Beat: "Watch this clip with the pause left in — now without it."

03

Plan what's on screen, not just what's said

Short-form is visual first. For each beat, write the shot: a before/after, a close-up, a screen recording. A script with no visuals becomes a talking head that loses people.

Weak

(creator talks to camera for 40 seconds)

Better

Beat 2 visual: split screen, original clip left, trimmed clip right, both playing.

04

End on the payoff, not a generic ask

"Like and subscribe" at the end of a Short rarely helps. Close with the payoff itself, or a line that sends the viewer to the next logical video.

Weak

Make sure to like, comment and subscribe for more content!

Better

Try it on your next upload — part two shows the same fix for your captions.

Rewrites are illustrative examples, not measured results.

Before you shoot

  • Can you say the whole script in under 60 seconds at a natural pace?
  • Does the payoff answer exactly the question the hook opened?
  • Does every beat have a shot, not just a line?
  • Did you fill every [placeholder] with something true — or cut the line?
FAQ

Questions

How long should a YouTube Shorts script be?+

Most scripts that fit in 30–45 seconds of natural speech are around 70–110 words. Shorts can run up to three minutes, but a tighter script usually holds viewers better.

Is the Shorts script generator free?+

Yes — no account, with a small hourly limit. Scoring the hook with the Hook Analyzer needs a free account.

Will it write facts about my topic?+

It writes a structure and lines for your idea, but it doesn't know your results. Anything that needs proof is left as a [placeholder]; check any factual claim before you publish.

Can I use it for TikTok and Reels?+

Yes. The hook–beats–payoff structure works on any short-form platform.
