YouTube engagement rate

What the number means — and how to compare it

Engagement rate is the share of viewers who did something: liked or commented. There's no single official formula, and the rate swings a lot by niche, format and channel size — so the most useful comparison is against your own videos.

01

Per view, not per subscriber

Dividing by views measures how people who actually watched reacted. Dividing by subscribers mixes in everyone who didn't see the video, which punishes big channels and flatters viral ones.

Weak

(likes + comments) ÷ subscribers

Better

(likes + comments) ÷ views

02

Compare like with like

Shorts, long videos and live streams behave differently, and so do niches. Compare a video with the same channel's other videos of the same format.

Weak

Comparing a Short's rate with a 20-minute tutorial's

Better

Comparing this Short with your last ten Shorts

03

A high rate on few views isn't a win yet

Small videos watched mostly by existing fans often show high engagement. What grows a channel is reaching new viewers — check whether the video beat the channel's usual views too.

Weak

"12% engagement!" on 300 views

Better

Views above the channel median and a steady engagement rate

Rewrites are illustrative examples, not measured results.

Reading your number

  • Same format as the videos you compare it with?
  • Enough views for the rate to be stable (hundreds, not dozens)?
  • Did the video also beat your usual views?
  • What do the comments actually say?
FAQ

Questions

How is YouTube engagement rate calculated?+

Here: (likes + comments) ÷ views, shown as a percentage, plus the like rate and comment rate on their own. Some tools divide by subscribers instead; per-view is fairer across channel sizes.

What is a good engagement rate on YouTube?+

It depends heavily on niche, format and audience, so a universal benchmark would mislead you. Compare against your own recent videos of the same format.

Why can't it read some videos?+

Creators can hide like counts, and private or deleted videos have no public data. You can still enter numbers from YouTube Studio manually.

Is this calculator free?+

Yes, no sign-up, with an hourly limit on link lookups. The manual calculator has no limit.
