What to look for while you scroll

One outlier can be luck. A pattern that repeats across a niche's wall is something you can use.

01

One subject, readable at phone size

Most of the views on YouTube come from phones, where a thumbnail is a few centimetres wide. The strong ones show one face or one object large enough to read in a feed.

02

Contrast with the feed, not with your last video

Look at a niche's wall and notice how the outliers differ from their neighbours: a bright frame where everything is dark, a plain background where everything is busy.

03

Three words or fewer on the image

The title already does the explaining. Text on the thumbnail works when it adds a number, a stake or a reaction the title doesn't say.

04

Show the result or the tension

Before/after, a price, a ruined thing, a face mid-reaction — outliers tend to show what's at stake, not the setup.

FAQ

Questions

Where do these thumbnails come from?

From public YouTube search results for the 50+ niches we track. Each video's views are divided by the median views of its own channel's recent uploads, and only videos at 1.5× or more are shown. The data is refreshed weekly.

Why rank by outlier score instead of views?

A million views on a channel that always gets a million says little about the thumbnail. Ten times a channel's usual views says the topic, title or thumbnail did something that channel's audience doesn't usually do — that's the part worth studying.

Can I copy these thumbnails?

Study them, don't copy them. Thumbnails belong to their creators. Take the structure — one subject, a contrast, a big number, a face reacting — and build your own with your footage and your result.

How do I save the ones I like?

Hover a video and press the bookmark in its corner. Saved videos collect on your Saved page in this browser, where you can copy their titles or export them as a CSV.

Does a high score mean the thumbnail caused the views?

No. Topic, title, timing and the algorithm all play a part; the score shows the video beat its channel, not why. That's why it helps to look for patterns across several outliers, not one.
