What to do with a transcript once you have it

A transcript is the fastest way to study a video without watching it twice: you can see exactly how long the intro took, where the promise of the title is paid off, and which lines carried the story. It is also the raw material for a blog post, a description, chapters or captions in another language.

01

Read the first 15 seconds first

Most viewers decide in the opening lines. Check how fast the video states what the viewer gets — and compare it with the title's promise.

Weak

Hey guys, welcome back to the channel, before we start make sure to…

Better

My Shorts went from 40,000 views to 900 in a week. Here's the one setting that caused it.

02

Find where the title is paid off

Search the transcript for the main words of the title. If the payoff appears only near the end, retention usually sags in the middle.

Weak

The answer to the title arrives at 11:40 of 12:00

Better

A first answer by 0:45, the full story after

03

Turn it into chapters and a description

Timestamps where the topic changes make good chapters; the two or three sentences that sum up the video make a better description than a keyword list.

Weak

Keyword-stuffed description with no structure

Better

Two-sentence summary + chapters at each topic change

Rewrites are illustrative examples, not measured results.

Using someone else's transcript

  • Use it to study structure and pacing, not to copy their script
  • Quote short lines only, with credit and a link
  • Auto-generated captions contain mistakes — check names and numbers
  • Download .srt if you need timings for captions or subtitles
FAQ

Questions

Is the YouTube transcript generator free?+

Yes. No sign-up, no account. Paste a video or Shorts link and the transcript appears with timestamps; copy it or download it as .txt or .srt.

Why does a video have no transcript?+

The transcript comes from the video's captions. If the creator turned captions off, or YouTube hasn't generated automatic captions (common for music, very new or very short videos), there is nothing to show.

Can I get the transcript in another language?+

When the video has captions in several languages, a language menu appears above the transcript. Auto-generated captions are only available in the language YouTube detected.

Are auto-generated captions accurate?+

Usually good for clear speech, weaker for names, numbers, slang and music. The page tells you whether you're reading uploaded or auto-generated captions.

Can I use a transcript from someone else's video?+

For research, notes and short quotes with credit, yes. Republishing someone's full script as your own is not fair use and can get your video or post taken down.
