How to Find YouTube Video Ideas (Using Real Data)

Five data-based ways to find YouTube video ideas that already proved they get views — outliers, trending charts, comments, search suggestions and your own analytics.

Running out of ideas is rarely the problem. Picking ideas that people will actually click is. The fastest way to stop guessing is to start from ideas that have already worked for someone with an audience like yours — then make them your own.

1. Start from outliers in your niche

An outlier is a video that got several times more views than its channel's usual. It is the strongest evidence that an idea works on its own, independent of the creator's fame. Look for ideas that broke out on more than one channel in the last few months.

2. Watch what is rising, not just what is big

A video with 20 million views on a giant channel tells you little. A video gaining views unusually fast for its channel tells you what the feed is pushing right now. Our trending pages measure views per hour for new uploads in 15 countries every hour, and flag the ones running above their channel's usual.

3. Mine comments — yours and your competitors'

Questions in the comments are free topic research. Sort a popular video in your niche by top comments and note every "can you do a video on…" and every confused question. One good question can be a whole video.

4. Use search suggestions for the wording

Type your topic into YouTube's search bar and read the autocomplete. It won't tell you volume, but it tells you how real people phrase the problem — useful for the title once you have the idea.

5. Look at your own top 10%

Your channel's best videos are your own outliers. In YouTube Studio, sort by views over the last year and ask what the top few have in common: format, length, promise, thumbnail style. Make more of whatever that is before chasing anything new.

Turning a found idea into your video

  • Keep the promise, change the specifics: a new number, a new setting, your experience.
  • Write three titles before you film, and check which one is clearest.
  • Plan the thumbnail before you record, so you capture the shot you need.
  • Before upload, put the thumbnail next to the current top videos on the topic and make sure it stands out.
